Frequently asked questions when working the parking?

Why do I have to volunteer?

Downey AYSO Region 24 is an ALL VOLUNTEER organization.  From the coach, team manager, treasurer to the commissioner, they all volunteer their time to make this soccer season possible for everyone. Yes, we all need to volunteer.

How can I volunteer on Saturdays from 6:30 am to 3:30 pm / Be a Board member?

All volunteers are always welcomed!  Please ask at the information booth and some one can help you!

How can I volunteer on Saturdays from 6:30 am to 3:30 pm / Be a Board member do I get paid?

Sorry, NO ONE gets paid for their generous volunteering. For those that help on Saturdays from 6:30 am to 3:30 pm, they get a meal for the day.  All volunteers for AYSO, including the commissioner, pays for their children’s registration just like YOU.

How many hours do I have to work?

3 continuous hours per child.  EX: 1 child= 3 hours, 2 children=6 hours, 3 children=9 hours and so on

Can I work one hour here and one hour there?

No.  The hours need to be worked continuously.  If you work only one hour here, there will be two hours with no coverage.  Time goes quickly.  In no time, you'll be done.

If I don’t think the time I was assigned is convenient for me.  Can I just come earlier or later?

The time has been assigned to insure coverage in each location.  The time cannot be altered.

The Team Manager/Coach said they can change the time earlier or later than what is posted?

The time has been assigned to insure coverage in each location.  The time cannot be altered. The only one that can alter the change is the Commissioner or the Volunteer Coordinator,… and the time cannot be altered.

If my husband/wife refs, do I have to volunteer for my 3 hours?

Yes.  Refereeing games are very different from working your 3 volunteer hours.  Refereeing helps a team get points to play in the tournament in December (Commissioner’s Cup).

Where do I sign-in and sign-out?

Go to the information booth to sign-in. Work your shift.  Then come back and sign-out.  That’s where you will pick up an orange vest (hopefully we have them).

Should I dress in a certain manner?

We highly suggest you wear a T-shirt, jeans and tennis shoes.  You'll be standing most/all the time.  Bring a hat, umbrella, sunscreen, and maybe a chair.  You will need to wear a yellow/orange vest.   They will be available at the info booth.   PLEASE NO PHONES. 

Can I have someone else work my hours?

Anybody 18 years or older can work your 3 hours of volunteer FOR PARKING.  Just make sure they write your child’s name, team # and coach name correctly to give you credit.

What do I have to do if my team is scheduled to work the FIRST SHIFT, from 7:30 am to 10:30 am?

You will help with the following:

Some will help with the following: set up the cones and yellow caution tape to keep people from parking in fire lanes, remind parents not to double-park, remind and/or guide people into parking stalls, remind people of the correct flow of traffic (one way), remind people not to park too close to buildings, remind people to drive slowly, remind and pick up any trash and place in trash baskets, guide people to the restrooms, cafeteria, Children run out between cars to the restrooms or chasing balls so slow speed is a MUST.  We do not want anyone hurt.   etc.

What do I have to do if my team is scheduled to work the LAST SHIFT, from 11:30 am to 2:30 pm?

Remind parents not to double-park. Remind and/or guide people into parking stalls.  Remind people of the correct flow of traffic (one way).   Remind people not to park too close to buildings.   Remind people to drive slowly. Children run out between cars to the restrooms or chasing balls.  We do not want anyone hurt.    Guide people to the restrooms.

AROUND 1:30 PM:

Help pick up any trash in parking lot and fields.  The faster its done, the faster you can sign out and leave.

Since I am volunteering in the Snack Shack, can I have FREE coffee, Gatorade and or food?

Sadly, no.  The selling of food items is for the benefit of the entire region.  On occasion the manager of the snack shack will allow free water (on hot days). 

I see some people go into snack shack and get free items.  Why is that?

Those people are AYSO ALL day volunteers. Those volunteers spend every Saturday of the fall season for the benefit of the entire region.  These volunteers also spend hours during the week setting up for Saturday events apart from working all day Saturday. They are sometimes given a free water, etc.  If you would like to be one of those volunteers, please feel free to speak to the commissioner.  All day volunteers are always welcome!

If you are working with food that is not individually wrapped, you must wear gloves.  Gloves will be provided at the snack shack.

How will I know how much each item costs?

There is a huge sign that tells what the snack shack sells and the cost.  If you will be helping with the selling of food, you will need to add all the amounts of the items being purchased.  There will be calculators provided. 

What do I have to do if my team is scheduled to work the FIRST SHIFT, from 6:30 am to 9:30 am?

You will help with the following:

Some will help set up the snack shack stand, information booth and Ref tent, some will help cut fruits and veggies for snack shack, some will help start cooking, some will help serve and sell.  You may be asked to help in parking/info booth if the snack shack is too crowded.

What do I have to do if my team is scheduled to work the LAST SHIFT, from 11:30 am to 2:30 pm?

You will help with the following:

Some will help start cooking, some will help serve and sell, some will start tearing down snack shack area, some will start cleaning up and putting away products, picking up trash (around snack shack, Maude Price, and/or Griffiths), and SIGN OUT is available when all has been done/cleaned at snack shack.

AROUND 1:30 PM:

Help pick up any trash in the fields.  The faster its done, the faster you can sign out and leave.
